Remove Background from Image
Cut a person out of their background and get a transparent PNG. Most background removers make you sign up, upload your photo to their servers, or pay to download a full-resolution result. Retouchr runs the AI model inside your browser — your photo is never uploaded anywhere, and the download is free and unwatermarked.
The first time you use it, your browser downloads the AI model once (about 20MB) and caches it. After that it works instantly, and it keeps working even with no connection.
How to remove a background from an image
- Drop your photo onto the page (JPG, PNG, WebP — or an iPhone HEIC via the HEIC tool first).
- Press Remove Background. On the first run the AI model loads once, then the cut-out is quick.
- Check the result — the checkerboard pattern shows where the image is transparent.
- Download the transparent PNG, or keep editing: crop it, add a solid background, or make it a profile picture.
FAQ
Is it really free, with no watermark or signup?
Yes. There is no account, no credit system and no watermark, and you download the result at full resolution. That's possible because the processing happens on your own device instead of on a server we'd have to pay for.
Do you upload my photo anywhere?
No. The AI model is downloaded to your browser and your image is processed locally — it never leaves your device. That's the whole design of the site.
What does it work best on?
People. The model is a portrait-matting model, so photos of a person — selfies, headshots, half-body shots — give the best cut-outs. Products, pets and objects are not what it's trained for and will come out worse.
Why does the first click take a while?
Because the AI model (about 20MB) is downloading to your browser on first use. It's cached afterwards, so later images are processed in a couple of seconds.
Does it handle hair?
Reasonably well — the edges are soft rather than jagged. Very fine strands can keep a faint tint of the original background colour, which is most noticeable when the background was strongly coloured.
What file do I get?
A PNG, because transparency needs an alpha channel. If you want a solid colour behind the subject instead, use the ID / passport photo tool or add a background afterwards.
